A 15-page report entitled “Food in the Public Interest: How New York City’s Food Policy Holds the Key to Hunger, Heath, Jobs and the Environment”, is a terrific follow-up to the well attended Politics of Food Conference in November. The Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer hosted over 600 food, policy and community activists and co-sponsored the event with Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, Father Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann of the United Nations and New York’s Mayor Bloomberg and a steering committee of food experts.

Dozens of recommendations surfaced on regional agriculture, food distribution, land use and hunger and nutrition education and which included several concrete proposals that are now in process. Highlights include the creation of a NYC food charter, consideration for a city-level Food Policy Council (New York State has a Food Policy Council), and the establishment of a “foodshed” where local growers and food processors within 100-200 miles of the city would have special access to New York’s enormous consumer and institutional markets.

The report and press conference at the Union Square Greenmarket generated a media coverage. Mr. Stringer announced that a NYC foodshed study will be conducted by the Urban Design Lab at Columbia University’s Earth Institute.
